200 Countries, 200 Years

Hans Rosling’s 200 Countries, 200 Years has to be one of my favourite YouTube videos. It is five minutes long and was done for the BBC. It is optimistic and fun and deals with great swathes of data entertainingly. Sadly Hans Rosling passed away in 2017. He has a swarm of other videos usually in the form of Ted Talks. The Wikipedia site gives some links.

Now of course, as your financial adviser should point out, that past performance is no guarantee of future performance and Rosling was acutely aware of this.

Now some people might question whether a combination of longevity and and income is a satisfactory proxy for the human condition, is a fair concern. On the other hand they are measurable metrics, or at least we can measure them with some confidence.

I don’t know whether Dr Rosling was a Rotarian or not, but I think he would have made a great one.
