Thought of the day
Minutes 26 February 2021
But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. they laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at The Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown
Carl Sagan
He who laughs last didn’t get the joke.

- Program – Juris introduced Luke Vorstermans from the Gibson’s Rotary club to talk about the Roll-a-hippo project.
- Luke showed 2 videos about the project. (see link to left)Hi club started with 50 of these water carriers. Then pledged to roll out 1000. It helps with gender equality in areas of the world where water collection is primarily a woman’s task. At start of pandemic they were giving out stand alone hippo rollers. they then joined forces with an Australian club and Hillcrest Rotary club in South Africa to make them part of survival garden kits. The kit includes seeds, a watering can, tools, fertilizer and a Roll-a-hippo. This enables people to grow their own food at a time when they cannot go to market and have little access to fresh food and no income. 160 kits have now been delivered.
- The project has had over 100 clubs in US and Canada donate. It is an international project for us but local for the South African club.
- The Roll-a-hippo was designed in 1992 as an alternative for transporting water. Only 60,000 have been manufactured. They cost $125US. transport can be expensive. They are durable and last about 5 years and can be reused in other capacities once they crack.
- We need to create awareness of this very simple idea.
