  • Business:
  • Tree project -the first lot of trees is on order. No date yet for planting.
  • Bingo- golden is handing it over to Castlegar Rotary at the end of April. the combining of our three clubs into one on the dropdown menu is underway. It seems it may be 1/3 each.
  • Fruitvale community garden – Mayor Steve Morissette will get back to us on who to contact.
  • Castlegar club would like to present on April 2nd on the water project in Peru.
  • We often cancel meetings on stat holidays and April 2nd is a stat but we decided to meet that day. No one can go anywhere right now.
  • Program Special Olympics
  • Maddy introduced Rhonda Chandler who introduced her son Jake Miller, a Special Olympics athlete. who has overcome many challenges to become an athlete and SO organizer. Jake loves sports and participates in eight programs in Trail; floor hockey (his favourite) basketball, bocce, crossfit. bowling, swimming, snowshoeing and golf. His highlight of Special Olympics was when he went to New Foundland representing BC in 2016.
  • Greater Trail has about 70 athletes of all ages in the 8 different sports. SO helps athletes maintain a healthy lifestyle with over 50 locals around the province.
  • Jake has become more tech aware since covid which has been especially hard on people with intellectual disabilities. some of his programs can be done online but many had to be put on hold. For many athletes this is their main social life.
  • fundraising is important so that there is minimal cost to athletes. fees are kept low and all equipment is supplied if needed. Their main fundraising has been from bake sales and BV Maydays.
  • Jake answered questions after his presentation. for more information the SO website is https://specialolympics.ca/british-columbia
  • It was suggested that we have a social in April meeting outside somewhere. We will come up with ideas next week for location and date.
  • Upcoming meetings
  • March 26th Shawn Wehan on Givsum a comprehensive management and engagement platform designed to help clubs work smarter, not harder, through these difficult times.
  • April 2nd Peruvian water project.
