Thought of the day

Minutes 18 June 2021

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
Douglas Adams

Don’t cry because it is over. Smile because it happened.

  • Program
  • Maddy introduced Marie Onyett the librarian from the Beaver Valley Library. Marie gave an overview of the services the library offers. Since covid they have not been able to do any in person programming. They were closed to the public for a while and then reopened with modifed hours. Seniors have been hard hit. They are an underserved population. When the library started children’s craft bags the idea was suggested to do something similar for seniors. In partnership with Jayme Fowler (Columbia Seniors Wellness) the library put together bags delivered to Mountainside, BV manor and individual seniors in their homes. This was done by volunteers. The bags contained, puzzles, a craft, a snack and drink plus a list of resources. they have delivered 65 to 75 bags every other week. The funding for this has come from the Friends of the Library. The program has been very successful. It helps people feel connected and has had much positive feedback.
  • Marie answered questions. There is no new library likely soon. Most library funding comes from a government grant of $16,500 a year which has not increased in a few years. They are working to improve connectivity speed although it is generally poor in this area. There are 6000 to 7000 regular users. Some Trail and Salmo residents prefer the BV library. This year there is no summer student.
  • The library hopes to get back to regular hours in September and it is likely that the Christmas craft fair will go ahead which is their biggest fundraiser.
  • Next year’s district Conference will be in Colville, May 12 to 15th 2022.
  • Happy and sad bucks (not) collected. Meeting adjourned at 8.15am
