• Business:
• The check arrived for the express grant for Webster school ski day. Pat will be the liaison with the school.
• Bingo – 4 of us with 3 from Trail attended last Friday. It went well for our first time – slow at times. We will be doing this every 6 weeks. We will get $100 per person on the new contract.
• November 6th tomorrow Trail Rotary has a road clean up. Juris and Pat will help.
• Pat reported on Lynn’s November message about the foundation and our almost eradication of polio. the polio plus society is looking for members who pledge to give at least $100 each year to polio until it is erradicated.
• Candy cane lane in Fruitvale is Dec 4th – they are looking for volunteers. Maddy will call and see what is involved.
• Christmas social – Saturday December 4th – suggestions Terra Nova, Lil T’s for lunch. Maddy will contact the Terra Nova to see what their protocols are for groups. Joan will organise a gift exchange.
• District is looking for an inbound Youth Exchange Co-ordinator.
• Suggestion that we re-introduce a Rotary Moment into the meeting.
• Program – Fake news
• The drive for fake news is relentless
• Truth is the first casualty of war. Lies get half way around the world before the truth gets its boots on. two quotes attributed to Winston Churchill.
• Utube encourages fake news. 100’s of utubers create ever more videos and need a new idea each time.
• Three factors drive fake news – 1 Money from advertising on sites such as facebook. 2 the drive to damage to an opponent or reinforce ones message and 3 journalists integrity.
• Current news events are used to suit your own cause.
• Six questions to combat FN – 1 Have I heard of this publisher before? 2 Is it the source I think? (check the url or email address) 3 Can you find the place on a map? 4 Has it been reported elsewhere? 5 Is there more than one piece of evidence? 6 Could this be a scam.
• Facebook has been under fire for the way the Capitol riot on January 6th was able to use it. Use the four way test. Our culture does not encourage changing your mind. Newspapers are subject to regulations but facebook is not. What is the truth.
• Juris will do a presentation on the 4 way test and what is truth.
