The meeting was held on zoom at 7.15am with 4 members present and guest Mark Kostash

  • Business
  • Last week’s evening social and barbecue which went well despite the rain.
  • Bingo. Juris, Maddy and Graham will go to Castlegar tonight. The progressive was won last week- $45,000 with nearly $20,000 as the consolation prize.
  • District Governor visit August 18th.
  • Changeover meeting July 13th at Patterson’s place in Trail. Let Pat know if you can attend
  • Wood for chairs is still waiting for mill availability, this week hopefully.
  • Dues are due – $120 for next 6 months payable by etransfer or cash to Carol or Juris. Let us know if you are not renewing membership.
  • Motion Graham/Maddy to add Pat to signatures on our bank account from July 1st. No quorum so Maddy will send it out by email for a vote.
  • Program Mark Kostash on Doctor’s without borders.
  • Did his medical residency. Loved surgery, but kept passing out – turned to anesthiology. 1973 won lottery so freed up a bit of time. working 2/3 time was fine for him. Did volunteer work.
  • Works 1 day a week and a weekend a month in Trail as they are short staffed. 1979 MSF was founded after Biafra war. 1999 won Nobel peace prize. First deployment he went to Somalia for three months, working full time. Did war injuries, bomb blast, obstetrics in other words everything. Infant mortality 1 in 5. Had armed guards. Helped teach a local man who saved his sisters leg from amputation and felt that did more good than anything else. Started helping with surgery. On another deployment he went to Nigeria. No operating room so put in a tent. operating in 40C heat very difficult. Went to Gaza next. Constant bombing. Set up tents as operating rooms, got flooded in a storm.
  • Most recent project in Yemen, has been three times. was westernized but now under sharia law. Worked at Alquaida hospital. Bombing at airport before he left.
  • Rotarian since 2009 in Calgary. Moved full time to Grand Forks. Loves giving talks. Volunteers for other groups ICRC, Mercy ships. currently working 120 hours in June and the same in July. Trail short staffed, expecting new hires soon. Hopes to retire soon. Mark answered questions and brief discussion on giving back and service above self.
  • Next week June 17th Doug h Swanson to talk about Trails society.
  • Happy and sad bucks (not) collected. Meeting adjourned at 8.15am
