- The past 300 years of science. In 1717 Isaac newton wrote about the formation of the universe and had God as part of the equation. 100 years later a mathematician LaPlace, came up with an equation without God in it. Uranus seemed to be breaking the law. Model was accurate in the middle but at extremes God had to be involved. 1886 Neptune was discovered. Mercury did not follow the law. Gravitational distortions. Named a hypothetical planet vulcan. 1915 Einstein’s general theory of relativity. No need for Vulcan. Einsteins theory explained it all.
- Coming to understand the absence of free will, no need for God to explain anything, leads to a different sort of compassion. Science does not judge. To know all is to forgive all. Who deserves punishment? Einstein wrote that his lack of free will makes him more compassionate around others. You love your enemy because they are perfect as they are. not because it is the right thing to do. If we pull someone out of the water, we also need to see why people are falling in upstream (Desmond Tutu).
- Questions about sentences for multiple murderers. Death penalty is not a deterrent. Looking at what people deserve gets us stuck. Discussion on prison system. comments about how we are programmed in our life. Restorative justice is about fixing something and that something is out of balance. No, the universe is fine as it is.
- Upcoming speakers -Jo Campagn to talk about her farm, date tba.
- happy and sad bucks (not) collected. Meeting adjourned at 8.15am
