Thought of the day

Minutes 23 February 2024

If you are going through hell, keep going.

Winston Churchill

You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.

Winston Churchill

Music: Stomping Tom Connors: Big Joe Mufferaw.

  • Business
  • Trail Youth Centre: Maddy and Theresa made turkey soup and McFadden’s brownie cake on February 21st
  • We need a banner for signage. Add magnets for fixing it to the tent we have.
  • Saturday February 10th we made beaver tails at Haines Park for the “up to Sno good” event. We collected $195 which went to the Beaver Valley Food Bank.
  • We will contact Liberty about doing a food drive for the food bank on March 23rd.
  • Maddy attended PETS in Seattle the weekend of February 15th to 18th. She gave a recap. Excellent speakers, Jennifer Jones (past RI president), Michael Angelo Caruso, Dean Rohrs, Dr Ted Bowtie Jenkins. Exellent few days. Maddy has ideas of improving the meetings and finding a fundraising project.
  • Club social – date Saturday April 13th, location to be decided….
  • Program Joan’s classification talk
  • Joan focused on how she likes to travel and meet people. When they moved to Canada they did road trips to learn about the country and listened to audio books. She recommends This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein. They travelled internationally more recently to Tanzania. Being retired they are more flexible. They missed out on $1000US to change their flight. Senior’s discount at hotels is often not advertised unless you ask for it. If you travel away from University and school breaks and holidays you get better deals. In Ecuador she met a retiree who had retired there and found a whole new life. Look for opportunities. They are booked to go to Jamaica later this year. There are risks of disease.
  • Joan will take over programming. She enjoys meeting people and learning about other cultures.
  • Next meeting March 1st in person at Tim Horton’s
  • Lynne Burch our Assistant Governor will attend. Maddy will confirm with her.
  • Happy and sad bucks (not) collected. The meeting adjourned at 7.45am
