Rules

I was doing a little bit of internet searching on Bishop John Shelby Spong. And I came across this nine-year-old discussion with Bishop Spong at a Rotary Club of Washington luncheon. Now there seems to be a rule (perhaps unwritten) that Rotarians don’t broach subjects that are related to sex, politics and religion. I must admit I am a little disenamoured with this reticence. While I have philosophical issues of knowing whether something is true or not, I have no problem chasing the truth’s coattails (apologies to Darrow). Similarly, and related, last year District 5080 started exploring diversity, equity and inclusion. We started off with Danica and Jordan. I thought them interesting, particularly Danica. She certainly pushed my buttons. I can certainly see why some Rotarians would push back and even try to sweep the subject under the table. Her worldview and mine certainly clashed. Not so much as to where we would like to go, but as to how to get there. So, a quick thank you to PDG Lynn for finding somebody who could push my buttons.

Anyway, here is the Seattle Rotary video on subjects that some Rotarians feel should not be touched. Full Disclosure: I like the late Bishop Spong, partially disagree with him and he does not push my buttons.

So, if Rotarians can’t come together, examine and deal with contentious issues in a sensible manner, who can?

And finally, all the best to Pat our new President and his two-year tenure. Pat, if you need any buttons pushing, I’m your man
