Thought of the day
9 October 2026
It takes considerable knowledge just to realise the extent of your own ignorance.
Thomas Sowell
Laziness is just the habit of resting before you get tired.
Jules Renard
The meeting was held on Teams at 7.15 am with 5 members present.
Music: The things we do for love: 10cc
- Business
- Our food drive on September 26th at Liberty Foods was a success. We sold all the bags in record time. Not much cash
- All Candidates Forum in Fruitvale, September 29th, was short. There was some confusion with the start time. Doors opened at 6pm. Many people thought it started at 6. We did not need to set up. Two candidates were not present. Julia O’Donahue from the Chamber of Commerce and Murray McConachie did most of the work.
- The District assembly was Saturday the 3rd, in Rossland. Juris and Maddy went. Interesting talk on Polio. Rosita, a guest from the previous week’s in-person meeting, attended. Juris discussed Ignite, the phone version of DacDb.
- Sheila Adcock will talk to us about homelessness in the area on November 20th.
- No information on Thanksgiving Roses yet.
- Salvation Army meal: We can sponsor a lunch at their kitchen. It will cost about $400. We need to provide 2-3 volunteers. Time to decide yet.
- What do we want to do for Christmas? Friday, December 4th is suggested as a tentative date for lunch.
- Monthly meeting format: Week one: in-person social; week two: YouTube video; week three: speakers; week four: more detailed business meeting; week five: an item from the Rotary magazine. This is a guideline; we can also be flexible.
- Program: A brief history of AI and why it matters.
- Many misconceptions about what it is and what it isn’t. Tools like ChatGPT are just one part of AI. Machines slowly learned to identify things and became faster than humans at some tasks. Originally, they were slow but became proficient with enough data.
- Discussion: Once you use these programs, they learn your preferences and build a profile of you. Whether you think you are using it or not, you are. How many of us use it intentionally? We still need to check the data. It can cost more to use AI than to hire a person.
- Happy and sad bucks (not collected)
Meeting adjourned at 8:15 am
